Search for truth is called research, which is modern scientific process to know the facts, because the findings are verifiable. It is based on scientific systematic method, which follows an acceptable procedure for on ducting research. Progressed in any field is linked with research in that field. Nursing being multi-functional career, it requires continuous development and progress and to provide better health care services and also to improve existing health care services research plays an important role. Research provides us with facts and solution in the management, deliverance, administration of health Care Services.
Research studies involves the mental thinking of problem which is known as logical thinking.
Two Ways of Logical Reasoning :
1)Deductive Reasoning : This process proceeds from the general to the specific, from theory to empirical data, moves from general to particular, using more variable to related statement and between variables.
2)Inductive Reasoning: This process proceeds from the specific to the general, from empirical data to theory. This involves observation of a particular object which can be part of larger object, thus, moves from particular to general, leading to conclusion.
Scientific Approach : If the study is carried on logical, systematic, and in orderly manner that directs a formal inquiry or study process in effort to get correct knowledge, then the research is accepted.
Here, scientific approach, is most advanced method of acquiring knowledge which includes both inductive and deductive reasoning to obtain the reliable source of knowledge.
Characteristics of Scientific Method :
1) The study is planned and carried on systematically.
2) Only those factors which are relevant to objectives of study are carried out by scientist.
3) The goal of this method is to understand the phenomena by its application in general way and not to be isolated.
4) The study, by the researcher is done in order to gain or develop new knowledge or theory.
Limitations of Scientific Approach :
1) It has ethical problems - Certain ethics are practiced by subjects cannot be given values or ethics.
2) Human complexity - Here, the human beings are physically or biologically same, but no two individuals are alike in behaviours, thinking or their life style.
3) Control problem - Due psychological problem, the human behaviorism cannot be controlled as in case of laboratory techniques.
